    ASTM A574 is the standard specification for alloy steel socket head cap screws (SHCS) in inch and metric series. It defines mechanical properties, hardness limits, dimensional tolerances, and certificate requirements for high-tensile precision fasteners used in machined-hole installations: bolted joints with limited bearing surface, recessed installations, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, machine-tool components, jigs and fixtures.

    A574 is a carbon / low-alloy steel specification, it does not cover stainless or super duplex SHCS. For corrosion-resistant socket-head cap screws, the matching specification stack is ASTM A1082 (super duplex stainless steel fasteners) + ASME B18.3 (dimensional) + the buyer's service spec (NACE MR0175, NORSOK M-650, API 6A).     When to Substitute Zeron 100 A1082 for A574 Carbon SHCS

    • Sour service: any application with H2S partial pressure above NACE MR0175 thresholds, A574 carbon SHCS will sulphide-stress-crack; Zeron 100 A1082 stays inside the qualified envelope.
    • Marine atmospheres + saltwater: chloride exposure pits A574; Zeron 100 holds CPT ≥ 50°C.
    • Cyclic temperature with chloride: thermal cycling concentrates chlorides at the bolt-flange interface; carbon steel rusts and seizes, super duplex resists.
    • Galvanic concerns: when the surrounding flange or bracket is super duplex / 6Mo / Inconel, A574 carbon SHCS becomes the sacrificial anode and corrodes preferentially. Match the bolt material to the flange material.
    • Cleanability + electropolish: pharmaceutical, food, semiconductor service requiring electropolished surfaces, duplex / super duplex electropolish; carbon does not.
